Bruns<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Throughout history, reflective inquiry has made a few different appearances; in education, learning, and coaching.\u00a0 In the context of coaching, ICF, the International Coaching Federation tells us reflective inquiry is \u201cwhen the coach enables the client to think about their situation in a deeper way, see things in a new light and possibly develop new perspectives\u201d. This concept is paramount in successful coaching.\u00a0 In this article, we will outline what is reflective inquiry, examples of how to use it in coaching, and what types of questions to ask will be explored.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-281bdcb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"281bdcb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reflective Inquiry: Definition<\/h2><p>Let\u2019s dig into the definition of <strong>reflective inquiry<\/strong> from the perspective of a dictionary.\u00a0 Reflective inquiry is made up of two words.\u00a0 Let\u2019s explore these 2 words separately.\u00a0 <a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macmillandictionary.com\/dictionary\/british\/reflective\">Macmillan Dictionary<\/a> defines <strong>reflective<\/strong> in a few ways:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cShowing a tendency to serious and careful thought\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cShowing that something exists, or showing what something is like\u201d<\/li><\/ol><p>Macmillan Dictionary defines <strong>inquiry<\/strong> as:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cA question intended to get information about someone or something\u201d<\/li><\/ol><p>These definitions seem to be telling us that reflective inquiry is serious and careful thought about a question posed by the <strong>thinking partner<\/strong> (the coach) that is intended to get information about someone or something the client brings.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f01493e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f01493e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">Origin<\/h2><p>So where did reflective inquiry begin?\u00a0 The practice of reflective inquiry was first mentioned in 1910 by Psychologist &amp; Educational Reformer, <strong>John Dewey<\/strong> in his book, <a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/935297154X\/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&amp;psc=1&amp;pldnSite=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"How We Think (opens in a new tab)\">How We Think<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>Reflective inquiry makes appearances in education, learning, and coaching.\u00a0 Let\u2019s explore this a bit, shall we?\u00a0 With regards to <strong>learning<\/strong>, Dewey contended that reflective practice refers to \u201cthe active, persistent and careful consideration of any belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the grounds that support it.\u201d\u00a0 Reflective inquiry it would seem is a way of <strong>reflecting through asking questions<\/strong>, powerful questions.\u00a0 Dewey is quoted as saying, \u201cWe don\u2019t learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience.\u201d\u00a0 There are a number of different references that talk about <strong>5 steps<\/strong> to John Dewey\u2019s concept of reflective inquiry. Let\u2019s look at reflective inquiry through the lens of coaching. The <strong>goal<\/strong> of reflective inquiry in coaching is a <strong>deepening of presence and connection<\/strong> and its objective is for the inquiry to serve as a sort of replay where the client can <strong>see themselves<\/strong>, their situation, their dilemma <strong>from a distance<\/strong>.\u00a0 In his book, <a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/smile.amazon.com\/How-We-Think-John-Dewey\/dp\/935297154X\/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=how+we+think&amp;qid=1663343897&amp;sr=8-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">How We Think<\/a>, Dewey wrote that \u201creflective inquiry enables people to climb a tree in their mind\u201d where they have clearer vision to make <strong>better decisions <\/strong>about what to do next.\u00a0 It can help them learn, identify what\u2019s in their way, see patterns of behavior that are both healthy and unhealthy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Marcia Reynolds\u2019 book, \u201c<a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/smile.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1523087838\/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&amp;psc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Coach the Person, Not the Problem: A Guide to Using Reflective Inquiry<\/a>\u201d brings reflective inquiry into coaching as a tool that works on <strong><a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/coachingoutsidethebox.net\/staging\/coaching-presence\/\">coaching presence<\/a><\/strong> towards mastery.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7bd834a elementor-widget elementor-widget-video\" data-id=\"7bd834a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;youtube_url&quot;:&quot;https:\\\/\\\/www.youtube.com\\\/watch?v=vMQwmvVo9So&quot;,&quot;video_type&quot;:&quot;youtube&quot;,&quot;controls&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"video.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-wrapper elementor-open-inline\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-video\"><\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42b500d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42b500d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>She has identified <strong>5 essential practices<\/strong> and <strong>3 mental habits<\/strong> for the coach to deepen presence and connection.\u00a0 The 5 essential practices align so closely to the arc of coaching that they are a perfect blend of what\u2019s needed.\u00a0 They are:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Focus (on how to shift from coaching the problem to the person)<\/li><li><a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aqkoYNYbWzs\">Active replay<\/a><\/li><li><a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vMQwmvVo9So\">Brain Hackin<\/a><a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vMQwmvVo9So\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"g (opens in a new tab)\">g<\/a><\/li><li><a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=A9sH3DrcCgE\">Goal Tending<\/a><a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=A9sH3DrcCgE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"\u00a0 (opens in a new tab)\">\u00a0<\/a><\/li><li>New and Next<\/li><\/ul><p>The concepts of the 3 mental habits are simple.\u00a0Marcia\u2019s <strong>3 mental habits<\/strong> for the coach are:\u00a0<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Align your brain<\/li><li>Receive (don\u2019t just listen)<\/li><li>Catch and release judgment<\/li><\/ul><p>Let\u2019s focus on the last 2: <strong>Receive<\/strong> (don\u2019t just listen), and <strong>Catch and release judgment<\/strong>.\u00a0 When I first read about receiving not just listening there was an instant feeling that came over me as I read the words.\u00a0 The feeling made me remember our clients <strong>need us to receive them wholly<\/strong>, not just their words, but how they say them, the facial expressions that go with them, their energy as it shifts and what it is telling me.\u00a0 In order to do this and not to be confused with anything I make sure I ground myself before the session as I explained in the <a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/coachingoutsidethebox.net\/staging\/3-levels-listening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">3 Levels of Listening<\/a> article. It\u2019s the same process to catch and release judgments. We all have <strong>judgment<\/strong> coursing through our bodies and minds.\u00a0 Sometimes our judgment is rooted in life experience, and sometimes in biases.\u00a0 While that\u2019s normal, it\u2019s not supposed to be how we respond as coaches, as highlighted in our article on <a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/coachingoutsidethebox.net\/staging\/what-coaching-is-and-isnt\/\">what coaching is and isn&#8217;t.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Coaches, especially new ones, are often focused on <strong>asking the right question<\/strong> from a list of powerful questions they received or found online.\u00a0 While such questions are great for practicing the art of not asking closed questions, they are not always helpful in the moment and can have an adverse impact on presence. I remember as a new coach right before Covid started, having the <strong>coaching arc and some sample questions<\/strong> in front of me. In person, that totally <strong>destroyed my presence<\/strong> as I searched for just the right question.\u00a0Then Covid happened and everything went online, even coaching.\u00a0 Still, as a new coach, I thought this was great because I could have the arc and sample questions visible on the computer screen just under the camera and look like I wasn\u2019t using a cheat sheet.\u00a0Wrong.\u00a0 My presence still suffered because I was still <strong>more engaged with the screen than the person<\/strong>.\u00a0 My <a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/coachingoutsidethebox.net\/staging\/3-levels-listening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">level of listening<\/a> remained at a solid level 1 with no wavering into the waters of level 2 or 3. I continued to try to master this approach with practice, which ultimately led to success.<\/p><p>In a group coaching session <a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/coachingoutsidethebox.net\/staging\/group-vs-individual-coaching\/\">(read here about the differences between individual and group coaching<\/a>), my own coach suggested I experiment with dropping the arc and try to just <strong><em>be<\/em> with the person<\/strong>.\u00a0I pondered this a bit, well days, and finally decided to abandon the prefabbed list of questions and listen to the client and to become their <strong>thinking partner<\/strong>. I had decided only in this way would my awkward presence not be the loudest voice in the room. That if my presence was able to take a back seat, they could think clearer. That only when I wasn\u2019t focusing on my coaching ability, or lack thereof, could they move into <strong>critical thinking<\/strong>.\u00a0 When I let go of the arc and listened to the client, the questions came on their own based on what the client said.\u00a0 The opportunity to see shifts that could be mirrored back to them came, and they were able to move deeper into thought and ultimately <strong>move forward<\/strong> instead of hovering around this awkward coach who was using notes that only served to get in the way of, well, everything.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4645692 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4645692\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Coach as a Thinking Partner<\/h2><p>Our clients need thinking partners. <strong>Coaches are thinking partners<\/strong>. In 1945, 35 years after Dewey\u2019s work, Vannar Bush foretold of a new profession called <strong>Knowledge Sherpas<\/strong>.\u00a0 These Knowledge Sherpas would become helpers that sorted through a person\u2019s thoughts in partnership. If they don\u2019t answer your question, it might not be the one they need asked.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><p>Example of questioning mid-conversation:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Client<\/strong>: \u201cI work a lot of hours every week.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<br \/><strong>Coach<\/strong>: \u201cHow many hours a week do you work?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<br \/><strong>Client<\/strong>: \u201c60.\u201d<br \/><strong>Coach<\/strong>: \u201cWow, that\u2019s a lot.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Summation<\/strong>:\u00a0 That may or may not be a lot for them but by our exclamation we have just brought ourselves into focus.\u00a0<\/p><\/td><td><p>Example of inquiry mid-conversation:\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Client<\/strong>: \u201cI\u2019m working a lot of hours every week.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<br \/><strong>Coach<\/strong>: \u201cWhat\u2019s that like for you?\u201d<br \/><strong>Client<\/strong>: \u201cSome weeks it\u2019s really rough.\u201d<br \/><strong>Coach<\/strong>: \u201cRough?\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Summation<\/strong>:\u00a0 Because our question, What\u2019s that like for you, was crafted with inquiry, the door to depth is opened.<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure><p>We don\u2019t know exactly what our clients are going to say.\u00a0 But if we <strong>maintain presence and trust<\/strong>, their words will tell us how to inquire.\u00a0Coaching is supposed to disrupt our client\u2019s current thinking and reflective inquiry helps to bring new ways of thinking into coaching. What\u2019s happening for you?<\/p><p><strong>Client<\/strong>: \u201cI needed to breathe.
